Covering almost two laps of the predominantly flat Manx Northern course, a road circuit stretching just over 13 miles from its starting point on Mooragh Promenade in Ramsey, the Isle of Man Marathon attracts runners from across the globe. Arguably no less demanding, the half is completed over one lap of this stunning route.

ISLE OF MAN – Entries are now open for the 2017 Microgaming Isle of Man Marathon and Half Marathon, organised by the Isle of Man Veteran Athletes’ Club.

The Isle of Man marathon is one of the Top 10 running events in the UK* and the half marathon event comprises Runner’s World 50 Best UK Races for 2016. Taking place annually on the picturesque course in the North of the Isle of Man, stunning scenery and a challenging route await those who enter. The course starts and ends in Ramsey, with runners heading along Mooragh Promenade and on to Bride. From there to Andreas and St Jude’s before turning back towards Ramsey. Marathon runners complete two laps of the course (26.2 miles in total) while half marathon competitors complete one lap (13.1 miles in total), all finishing at the Ballacloan Stadium.

The 2017 event takes place on Sunday 13th August. New to this year is the 4 leg relay race, comprising a team of four runners covering the marathon course, amounting to approximately 6.5 miles stages, encouraging new runners to partake in the event alongside their family, friends, or even colleagues.

Isle of Man Marathon and Half Marathon 2016

Terry Bates, Chairman of Isle of Man Veteran Athletes’ Club, comments: “The event is growing year on year which is great to see, but what we have done by including a relay event is provide new or not so experienced runners to partake and experience the feeling of a marathon event. It’s something completely new for us to try, and is a first for the island, so we hope it’s a popular addition to the event.”

In 2016 a record 448 people passed the finish line with 101 entries recorded for the full and 347 for the half. Phil Martin won the men’s marathon in a time of 2:36:42 while Samantha Amend took the women’s crown, setting a new course record in 2:54:50. For the half-event, Tim Kennedy took first place in the men’s race finishing in 1:16:44 and Hayley Ashby won the women’s in 1:29:15.

Claire Coleman, Head of Microgaming PlayItForward, comments: “This will be our fifth year working with the IOMVAC marathon committee and I’m delighted to see how much we have grown the event over the years. I think the addition of the relay will only encourage more people to get involved. With entries now open, we hope to see numbers increase yet again for 2017.”

Once again the Microgaming Isle of Man Marathon and Half Marathon forms part of No Rest for the Wicked, a series of six different races in six days on the island. It kick starts the jam-packed racing week.

15.02.16 Microgaming Isle of Man Marathon and Half Marathon Entries Open for 2016 - Less + More

ISLE OF MAN – Entries for the Microgaming Isle of Man Marathon and Half Marathon are now open.

The annual event, renowned for being one of the friendliest and most scenic marathons in the running calendar, this year will be held on Sunday 14th August. Entrants can run their preferred distance, either the full (26.2 mile) marathon, or half (13.1 mile) marathon. Held in Ramsey, the race route follows the seafront before heading in-land to cover the beautiful northern plains, to a high point of 259 feet, and ending at the Ballacloan Stadium. Marathon runners complete two laps of the circuit, whilst half marathon participants complete one. Walkers are also invited to compete in the half marathon event.

Marathon 2015

The marathon event will this year team up with the British Masters Athletic Federation (BMAF), an association of athletic clubs in Britain and Northern Ireland with over 5,000 members aged over 35. The race is being used for the BMAF’s 2016 Marathon Championships.

The half-marathon event, which features in the Runner’s World 50 Best UK Races for 2016 is, along with the marathon, growing year-on-year. In 2015 a record 415 participants crossed the finish line. The men’s marathon winner was Marcin Soszka of Saltaire Striders club, completing the course in 2:48:18, whilst the women’s marathon winner was Hephzibah Toby of Uckfield Runners, who crossed the line at 3:37:05. The half men’s event was won by Mark Dooley in 1:11:20, with Nikki Boyde, 2014 marathon winner, taking the 2015 women’s half marathon win with a time of 1:25:38.

Terry Bates, Chairman of Isle of Man Veteran Athletes’ Club, comments: “It is amazing to see the impact this event has on the running community, not just here on the island but also further afield. The Microgaming Isle of Man Marathon and Half Marathon is an internationally recognised event; this is evident in the fact that both the men’s and women’s 2015 marathon winners both travelled to the island to compete. With BMAF on board this year for the full marathon, we expect the event to be bigger than ever before, building on our previous years of success.”

Claire Coleman, Head of Microgaming PlayItForward, comments: “Heading into our fourth consecutive year of support, it is brilliant to see the event go from strength-to-strength. To be recognised by Runner’s World magazine as a half marathon not to be missed, is a fantastic achievement; it shows that the effort and hard work the marathon committee are putting in is paying off!”
